webDiplomacy: Under the name phpDiplomacy, the first dedicated online Diplomacy site, launched in December 2004, prompting the start of the DIGITAL AGE of Diplomacy. A good site to play Dip on (still) with an active Forum. However, following a split between the site owner and many of the moderator team at the time (I’m not sure of the details but I think it was that the owner seemed to support a discriminatory post) the site has been in something of a decline. https://webdiplomacy.net/
West, The: Alternative name for THE NORTH, comprising France, England, Germany and Russia (by virtue of St Petersburg’s inclusion).
Western Powers: France, England, Germany and, sometimes, Russia.
Western Triple (alliance): Alliance of England, France and Germany.
White Press: Messages sent from one player to others that genuinely identifies the sender.
Winner Takes All (WTA) system: A way of deciding games whereby the winner is either a soloist or the Board-Topper when the game ends in a draw or reaches the Game End Date. In this format, only the winner scores.
Win Only: A School (philosophy) of playing Diplomacy that has the goal of playing to achieve a draw when one can no longer win the game.
Winter Phase: The part of the game in which units can be added or removed from the board. If you have more SCs than units on the board you can build additional units (if you control your HOME SCs still and they aren’t occupied). If you aren’t able to build additional units, you lose these units, although they may be able to be built in the next Winter Phase. If you have fewer SCs than units on the board, them you have to DISBAND units (remove them from play).
Winter 1900: VARIANT of Diplomacy in which players can build any UNIT in any of their HOME SCs as long as the unit built can move from the SPACE.
Witches, The: Name given to England and Turkey together, England being the Witch of the West/North, Turkey the Witch of the East/South. This is due to both powers being defensively strong and difficult to kill. Cut off the head and burn the body difficult. However, if one does badly, it is often the case that the other does badly, too.
WTA: Abbreviation of WINNER TAKES ALL.
XD: Abbrev for EXTENDED DEADLINE.
Zine: A fan-based and fan-published magazine about a hobby.
