Units: The pieces on the board, either armies or fleets. Armies move on land spaces only. Fleets move on sea spaces or coastal land spaces. Armies can be ordered to HOLD (stay in place), MOVE (move from the space they’re in to a neighbouring space), or SUPPORT (work with another unit to achieve its objective). Fleets can be ordered to HOLD, MOVE, SUPPORT, or CONVOY (transport an army over a sea space to another land space).

Unranked game: A game that doesn’t involve any kind of scoring. Often referred to as a HOUSE GAME.

Variable Placement: Alternative name for the WINTER 1900 variant.

Variant: A game based on the rules of Diplomacy. This may be a RULES VARIANT, a SETTING VARIANT, or a SYNTHETIC VARIANT… or a combination of any of these.

VDL: See VIRTUAL DIPLOMACY LEAGUE.

Vienna Sandwich alliance: An alliance featuring Italy, Turkey and Russia. Named because it sandwiches Italy.

Viennese Waltz alliance: An alliance featuring Italy, Germany and Russia. Aimed at dancing around Austria.

vFTF: See VIRTUAL FACE-TO-FACE DIPLOMACY.

Virtual Diplomacy: Alternative for VIRTUAL FACE-TO-FACE DIPLOMACY.

Virtual Diplomacy League: A league that is played through vFTF play.

Virtual Face-to-Face Diplomacy: Format of play that has players playing at the same time over the internet and communicating in real time.

Virtual World Diplomacy Classic: Diplomacy tournament organised by the VWDC.

Virtual World Diplomacy Community: Online community organising and running VIRTUAL DIPLOMACY tournaments.
