N

NADF: Abbreviation for NORTH AMERICAN DIPLOMACY FEDERATION.

NAP: Abbreviation for NON-AGGRESSION PACT.

National Diplomacy Championship (NDC): In the UK, the… well, National Diplomacy Championship. Recently (2024) revived by Bradley Grace. See https://diplomacy.co.uk/.

National Diplomacy Championship Hoax: A non-event not organised that neither involved six regional tournaments nor a final that was never going to be held in Las Vegas, and not going to be filmed by ABC’s “Wide World of Sports”. It also promised a non-existent $25,000 prize.

National SC: Alternative name for HOME SC.

NBR: Abbreviation for NO BUILDS RECEIVED.

NDA: Abbreviation for NORWEGIAN DIPLOMACY ASSOCIATION.

NDC: Abbreviation for NATIONAL DIPLOMACY CHAMPIONSHIP.

Nelson’s Rule: “The only goofy players are the ones that think that goofy play exists.” Make of it what you will.

Neutral Orders: Used by GMs when a player NMRs in Spring 1901. The NMRing power will have a set of orders entered, which will be common orders but which won’t see a unit move next to another player’s home SCs (so no F Lon-ENG, for instance) except in the Venice/Trieste area. The idea was that an S01 NMR didn’t unbalance the game.

Neutral (space): A land space on the board of Diplomacy that does not, at the start of the game, belong to any of the powers in the game.

Neutral Zone: A line of spaces on the board stretching from North Africa to Livonia or the Gulf of Bothnia that are sea or neutral spaces and split the board into West/North and East/South. There are 17 Supply Centres on either side of the board, with St Petersburg included on the North side.

Newszine: A zine that was limited to circulating news about the Hobby.

NFP: Abbreviation for NOT FOR PUBLICATION.

Nightmare Alliance: A triple alliance featuring France, England and Austria. Named from the initials of the three powers, which almost spell ‘fear’ for everyone else.

NMR: Abbreviation for NO MOVES RECEIVED.

No Builds Received (NBR): A report that a player failed to issue Build orders.

No Moves Received (NMR): When a player doesn’t submit orders by the phase deadline, they are said to have NMRed. Their units will be issued with HOLD orders, and are treated as if this was the orders the player had submitted. May lead to the player being removed from the game, or the player may be given another chance, depending on the HOUSE RULES or SITE RULES.

Non-Aggression Pact (NAP): An agreement between players in which both agree to not attack the other, often for a specified period and sometimes on-going. As with any other agreement in Diplomacy, subject to one or the other ignoring it completely (often with immediate effect).1

Non-SC: A land space on the board of Diplomacy that is not a Supply Centre.

No Retreat Possible (NRP!): A report that a unit has been disbanded because it could not retreat to any space on the board.

No Retreat Ordered (NRO): A report that a player failed to issue Retreat orders.

North, The: The side of the board featuring England, France and Germany, and St Petersburg in Russia. Also features the neutral SCs Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Alternatively known as the West.

North American Diplomacy Federation (NADF): An organisation that overseas, guides, facilitates the Diplomacy Hobby in North America.

Northern openings: A set of English opening moves that sees F Edi-NWG and F Lon-NTH.

Northern System: A group of opening moves for Russia that sees A Mos-Stp.

Northern Triple Alliance: An alliance of England, Germany and Russia.

Norwegian Diplomacy Association (NDA): Originally formed so that Norway could host EuroDipCon in 1996. It was revived in 2000 but seems to not have been active (online, at least) since 2007.

No Standby Policy (NSP): If a player left a game, a GM would often have a list of stand-bys, players who would take over an empty position; also used on some websites. If the NSP was used, it meant that, should someone drop from the game, they wouldn’t be replaced. Given that this results in an unbalanced game, seems a bit short-sighted.

Not For Publication (NFP): Something that might be sent to a GM or zine editor that you didn’t want published. Might be gossipy, for instance, or personal. Needed because zine editors are desperate for things to publish.

Novice (1): Someone completely new to the game of Diplomacy (see DIPLOPUP).

Novice (2): Someone new to a certain form of Diplomacy.

Novice (3): Someone new to playing on the website.

Novice game: A game of Diplomacy for newbies only. The idea was that they could all learn together, without being put off the game by being crushed by more experienced players, and that it kept them out of more experienced players’ games. Slightly unfortunate that when you learn in a novice game, you learn to be a novice!

n-Player Draw: A draw between a number of players, with the number replacing the ‘n’.

NRO: Abbreviation for NO RETREAT ORDERED.

NRP!: Abbreviation for NO RETREATS POSSIBLE.

NSP: Abbreviation for NO STANDBY POLICY.

Nursery alliance: An alliance between a novice and an experienced player. You can see the problem for other players, I hope: the Dippyist turns the Diplopup into a Dip Bitch. Look under D for anything you don’t understand!

Nurse Shark: An experienced Diplomacy player who attracts newbies to them, to gobble up the Diplopup at some point in the game. Explained more here.

n-Way Draw: A draw between a number of players or blocs of players, with the number replacing the ‘n’.
