(E): In a game report, denotes an eliminated player, often with a time stamp to indicate when they were eliminated.

Early Leader: When one player in the game establishes a lead on the others early on.

Early Leader Effect (1): When players in the game mobilise to restrict, restrain or remove an Early Leader.

Early Leader Effect (2): Being attacked by other players due to establishing a lead early in the game, causing you to lose SCs and possibly leads to your elimination.

East, The: The eastern side of the board, typically including Russia, Austria, Turkey and Italy (by virtue of Italy needing to become involved in this area of the board more than in the West).

Eastern Powers: Alternative name for Southern Powers: often Russia, Austria, Turkey and, sometimes, Italy.

Eastern Triple alliance: An alliance of Russia, Turkey and Austria.

EDC (1): Abbreviation for EURO DIPCON.

EDC (2): Abbreviation for the European Diplomacy Championship. As the two – Euro Dipcon and the Championship – are effectively one and the same, it really doesn’t matter.

Electronic Age: A Diplomacy era in which Dip was played via email. Identified in Diplomaticon Quarterly #1 as starting with the first publication of The Diplomatic Pouch in 1995. However, Electronic Protocol was probably the first zine to focus on such games, and that was first published in October 1988 and this is probably the best start date. Succeeded by the DIGITAL AGE, with the creation of phpDiplomacy (now known as webDiplomacy) in December 2004.

Electronic Protocol (EP): An online zine, of sorts, for playing games. It eventually incorporated all games run using Usenet. A feature was no NMRs: if any player didn’t send in orders, they were harassed or replaced and games were held over. No longer published(?).

Elephant and Whale alliance: Any alliance where one power builds armies, the other builds fleets. Also known as a Tiger and Shark alliance.

Eliminate: To remove a player from a game by taking ownership of all their SCs.

Eliminated (E): In a game report, a player that was eliminated. Usually includes a time stamp for when this happened.

Elimination: The act of eliminating a player.

Email Diplomacy: Alternative name for PBEM Diplomacy.

Endgame: The stage of a game of Diplomacy when it becomes likely that either one player will solo or the game will end in a draw.

End of Game Statement: Article written by players from a game, giving some insight into how they played the game, and why they played that way.

EoG: Abbrev for END OF GAME.

EP: Abbreviation for ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL.

Euro DipCon (EDC): A convention that tours Europe, being played in different countries when it’s held, at which the European Diplomacy Championships are held.

European Diplomacy Championships (EDC): Diplomacy tournament, not restricted to Europeans but tending to feature more Europe-based players than not. Started in 1993 and first held in France, it involved 194 players. It has been declining in numbers since. Usually an annual event. For the last two years (2023 and 2024) it has been held in Sion, Switzerland. In 2024 it was won by Karthik Konath.

Exasperation: When your ally starts their response with: “I see where you’re coming from …”

Expanded Openings: A series of moves, from Fall 1901 onwards, that have an objective. See BASE OPENINGS.

Extended Deadline Play (XD) (1): Playing Diplomacy on a dedicated Diplomacy website or app. However, may be accurately used for PLAY-BY-EMAIL or PLAY-BY-FORUM games.

Extended Deadline Play (XD) (2): Alternative for REMOTE PLAY.

Exultation: The feeling after launching a stab so effective that other players run away screaming.
